Valentines Marathon

Posted on Feb 15th, 2007 by mauichris : Here now mauichris
Valentines day this year felt like a marathon. This Valentines day was full of unexpected and interesting events.

A few days earlier on a hike with some good friends I was invited over to their house for Thanksgiving dinner... Kind of early to be asking but ok. Being the voracious eater that I am I was excited to envision all the side dishes and pies. The date was the only thing out of place. Valentines Day we would have a "Thanksgiving" feast. As far as I'm concerned anytime and for whatever reason to get together and eat a meal with people is alright with me. I love potlucks and BBQs and feasts.

Anywho I woke up early on Wednesday to get my paper done and study for my upcoming test. The paper went by pretty quickly and before I knew it I was on my way to class. I, for some reason (lack of forsight maybe), scheduled all my classes back to back without a break for lunch. Regardless that isn't the story I'm telling...

So after classes I get word that the Peace rally / demonstration  thing is just starting So I run over to the mall where we are supposed to meet and pick up a few signs. The signs were great. As cars drove by they were greeted by giant broken hearts with messages about bringing our troops home and peace. The theme was a great one, "You broke our hearts, Now bring home our troops" It was just catchy enough that the Maui News picked the story up as front page news. The plan I find out is to go to the military recruiters office and express our dismay with how many troops have died and how it is breaking our hearts.
We were pretty successful and many people asked why we had broken hearts. Unfortunately the security guards didn't like us having signs and handing out fliers in the mall so we were kicked out.

So Peace rally first, then it was off to thanksgiving dinner with my friends. They were all in a relationship, so it was three couples and me being the singleton. I called a few of my lady friends but they were tied up. I had a lot of fun and to my surprise and delight someone brought a homemade pecan pie. Mmmmmm my oh my how I love pecan pie! Pecan pie is by far my favorite pie. More-so than apple or blueberry or pumpkin or even strawberry rhubarb (although I do make a pretty good one).

After we stuff ourselves in what I believe should be a yearly ritual I get a call from one of my friends, she also was out with a bunch of other couples and we were feeling cynical of the whole holiday. I suggested we go on an adventure to see the new town center being built in Pukalani, it is a pretty eerie site. Almost like a ghost town but one that hasn't been built yet. Not wanting to stick around too long, lest the zombies found us we stopped off at the park to look for shooting stars. To pass the time we told bad pirate jokes and joked around under the night sky. When we ran out of pirate jokes and constellations we knew, we had to invent some.

I have to say one of the funner valentines days that I've ever had. Life is such a great adventure as I see it. There is much to learn along the way and I am slowly realizing that the meaning of life lies in life and not at the end of life. Every day we must experience awe for the world around us and be truly thankful for the gifts that we receive and the hard times and everything inbetween. For it is in this that we find ourselves and our true nature of reality is revealed.
